How to obtain dual citizenship in the US and the UK?

The United States and the United Kingdom are arguably the most developed modern countries. It is hardly surprising that many UK citizens also want to acquire US citizenship.

In short, the top benefits you will get as a bipatride with UK and US passports are:

  • Simplified traveling between the two countries,
  • More opportunities to find the best job, and
  • The possibility to vote or occupy a post in US government.

Many countries prohibit dual citizenship, but both the United States and United Kingdom have almost no restrictions whatsoever.

As a UK citizen, you can obtain US citizenship in several ways. First, you should check if at least one of your parents is an American, either native or naturalized, which means you will get American citizenship through parentage. Your task will then be to contact any United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) office and request the Certificate of Citizenship. Valid proof of your American roots must be provided to USCIS. And you can always use a specialized service to get things done for you.

Second, on the assumption that your parents are not Americans, you should request a green card and move to the United States. Often, UK citizens simplify getting dual citizenship in the US because they marry Americans. Marrying a US citizen will reduce the number of years you will have to live on the American soil to earn the right for naturalization. Put simply, you will need only three years to live in the US after marrying a US citizen. Otherwise, should you get a green card to work in the US, whole five years it will take you to naturalize.

Third, the least obvious but the fastest method to become an American is to serve in US army. After serving in the US armed services for a year in peacetime and getting a legal status of permanent resident, you are allowed to apply for naturalization.

Note that even if you successfully obtain US citizenship, it may be annulled due to many reasons. But if you are not planning to occupy a governmental post in the UK that requires you to relinquish US citizenship, or you are not going to serve in UK army as an officer, then you will keep your dual citizenship status.
