Pros and Cons of dual citizenship in the US and Israel

Home » Apply for citizenship » Pros and Cons of dual citizenship in the US and Israel

Moving from Israel to the United States and naturalizing in the US will open many new prospects for you. You will get all the privileges as a lawful US citizen while keeping your rights as an Israeli national as well.

To acquire US citizenship, you will simply need to follow the standard rules as described by United States Citizenship and Immigration Services. As we have already discussed, there are three main ways to become a US citizen: by getting US citizenship through parents, by marrying an American, or by getting a green card.

However, with privileges such as an opportunity to get Social Security or being elected to a public post in the United States, you also get obligations and restrictions. There are two main problems that you need to think about before applying for US citizenship.

  • Your US citizenship can be revoked. Because Israel laws defines compulsory military service, you have to serve in Israeli army. Having acquired US citizenship, you should avoid rising to an officer rank in Israeli armed forces because otherwise, the US laws can deprive you of US citizenship. To learn more about what can lead to your expatriation in the United States, you can read this article.
  • Internal Revenue Office, the US agency that manages the Internal Revenue Code, demands that you pay taxes to the US even when you leave the country and work in Israel.

The last issue is actually quite annoying if you plan to work in Israel after you acquired US citizenship. Note that Israel and the United States do have a tax treaty, and banks of both countries share your information between US and Israeli governments.

There is one more problem related to your bank account held in Israel, if you have any. Since 2014, the United States and Israel have an agreement that demands Israeli banks to report about any accounts that you may hold. If you do not disclose this information voluntarily, the US government will fine you, and you will lose up to half of your money on that bank account.

What this means for you is that you can become a US citizen. But make sure you consult a lawyer and study all the information regarding taxation in both countries beforehand.
