How to update a Citizenship or Naturalization Certificate after a name change?

Whenever you decide to change your name, you will have to update your Naturalization or Citizenship certificate thereby informing the government about such a change. You may also want to correct your name that is printed on a certificate. To get a new certificate, you need to file a form to United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS).

The form that is required by USCIS is called the Application for Replacement Naturalization/Citizenship Document, or the Form N-565. This is the same form you will file to USCIS when your certificate is lost or stolen, or when you want to update any other data, such as a date of birth.

The Form N-565 has seven pages overall, but since you only want to change your name, you are not required to fill out the entire form. More specifically, the parts 3, 5, and 9 are necessary to be filled in when you apply for changing your name.

If your name was changed due to a court order, you need to send this order to USCIS along with the Form N-565. Additionally, you are requested to include the original Naturalization or Citizenship Certificate when filing the form.

As USCIS specifies, your name can be changed only if you provide enough evidence. You have to provide a court order, divorce decree, or marriage certificate to confirm that your request for a name change is legal.

One of the most important aspects of requesting of a new Naturalization or Citizenship Certificate is the filing fee, which is equal $555. The filing fee is relatively substantial, that is why we strongly recommend you to provide only correct data in the form and attach any other relevant legal documents to the form. If you do not give enough data, or if you mention incorrect data, USCIS can reject your application form. What is worse, USCIS will not refund the money you paid whatever they decide about your application.

In summary, it is certainly possible to get a new Naturalization or Citizenship Certificate when your name was changed. For other cases on how to fill in the Form N-565, you may consult the special Form N-565 Instructions PDF document available at the USCIS website, or you can benefit from our service to replace your naturalization certificate.
