For various reasons, the need may arise to replace or renew your green card. You should apply to replace your Permanent Resident Card if your card has been lost, stolen, damaged, or if any of the information on your card needs to be changed. Additionally, if you became a permanent resident prior to your 14th birthday, you must replace your green card when you turn 14 years old. You must also replace your green card if:

  • There has been any change in your commuter/permanent resident status
  • Any of the information on your card is incorrect or has changed since your most recent card was issued
  • You are in possession of an older version of the alien registration card, including USCIS Form I-151, Form AR-3, or Form AR-103- all of which are no longer valid proof of your immigration status, or
  • You never received the previous card issued to you by USCIS

If you are a permanent resident with a form I-551 valid for 10 years and your card has already expired or will expire within the next 6 months, you should renew your green card. This does not apply to conditional residents, however. A conditional resident whose status is expiring should use Form I-751 in order to remove the conditions on your permanent resident status. Submit your completed application to USCIS within the 6 months prior to your card’s expiration to avoid any problems that an expired permanent resident card may present.

Replacing Conditional Resident Card/Replacing Permanent Resident Card

If you are a permanent resident needing to replace your green card or a conditional resident needing to replace your two-year green card, you can initiate the application process for a replacement card by completing the E-Filing Form I-90, Application to Replace Permanent Resident Card online, or by filling out a paper Form I-90 and returning it by mail.

Renewing Permanent Resident Card While Inside the United States

If you are a permanent resident and you are inside the United States when your 10-year green card expires or will expire in the next 6 months, you can initiate the renewal process by completing the E-Filing Form I-90, Application to Replace Permanent Resident Card online. Or you may fill out a paper Form I-90 and return it by mail.

Along with your Form I-90, you must submit a photocopy of your expired or expiring green card. If your name has changed since your card was issued, you must provide documented evidence of this name change (i.e. marriage certificate, adoption decree, court order, etc.).

Renewing Permanent Resident Card from Outside the United States

If your green card will expire sometime in the next 6 months and you are outside the United States but plan on returning within 1 year of leaving, and before the card expires, you must file your application for renewal immediately upon returning to the United States.

If, however, you are outside the U.S. when your green card expires and you did not apply for a renewal card before leaving, you must contact the closest USCIS office, U.S. Consulate, or U.S. port of entry prior to filing Form I-90 for a renewal card.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to get my green card renewed?

It takes approximately 10-12 months to receive your new green card. When you take your renewal application in person to USCIS, they will create a temporary proof of status for you using your passport picture. This document will be valid for one year.

Will I be penalized if my card has already expired?

No. USCIS will not penalize you if your green card has expired. However, you should apply to renew your green card as soon as possible.

What will happen if I don’t renew my green card?

Although your permanent resident status will not be affected, you could have problems finding employment, obtaining benefits, or re-entering the United States from abroad if you do not renew your expiring green card.

Can conditional permanent residents file Form I-90 for green card renewal?

No. A conditional permanent resident card is valid only for 2 years. During the 90-day period before the card expires, the conditional resident is required to file a petition to have the condition(s) removed.

What should I do if I am physically unable to go to my local USCIS office?

Contact your local USCIS office to request special accommodations if you are physically ill, disabled, or otherwise unable to appear in person.

How do I know when to renew my green card?

Green cards issued since 1989 show an expiration date on the front of the card indicating when the card needs to be renewed.
