Typically, a re-entry permit is valid for 2 years from the date it is issued.

Obtaining a re-entry permit prior to leaving the U.S. for more than 1 year, but less than 2 years, protects your permanent residency status while you are abroad. If you travel outside the U.S. frequently for stays of 1 year or less, obtaining a re-entry permit demonstrates your commitment to maintaining your permanent residency status. Also, if you will be traveling abroad and cannot or do not wish to get a passport from your country of origin, you may want to get a re-entry permit.
