General instruction by USCIS
Form N-565, Application for Replacement of Naturalization/Citizenship Document may be used for replacement of one the following documents:
- Naturalization Certificate;
- Certificate of Citizenship;
- Repatriation Certificate;
- Declaration of Intention.
The form may also be used to apply for a special certificate of naturalization as a U.S. citizen to be recognized by a foreign country. You may file the form with either the Nebraska or Texas USCIS Service center, depending on where you live. When submitting the form, you must also include the required filing fee, supporting documents, and two passport size photos taken within 30 days of filing the application.
Upon receipt of the application, USCIS will review the information submitted. Your application may be denied if the form is not properly completed or you did not include the required initial evidence. Without this initial evidence you will not be able to establish your basis for eligibility. If all the information is included and the form is properly completed, the application will be approved and you will be sent your naturalization or citizenship certificate.
I received my naturalization certificate and notice there was a mistake on the certificate and my name was spelled incorrectly. My application and all information I sent to USCIS spelled my name correctly. Do I need to pay the N-565 filing fee, even though this was not my mistake?
Can I request that my application for replacement of my naturalization certificate is expedited for an emergency or any other reason?
Yes. Expedited petitions or applications are accepted by USCIS if it meets one or more of the following criteria:
- Severe financial loss to a company or person;
- Emergency Situation;
- Humanitarian Reasons;
- Nonprofit organization whose request is in furtherance of the cultural and social interests of the United States;
- Department of Defense or national interest situations;
- USCIS error;
- Compelling interest of USCIS.
If you request your application or petition to be expedited and have satisfied at least one of the above listed criteria, you will need to include a letter explaining your situation and why your application or petition should be given such attention. In addition, you will need to write “Request for an Expeditious Request” on the top of this letter. Once you have filed your N-565 you will want to make an appointment at your local USCIS office using the InfoPass system, which can be done at USCIS.gov. You will need to bring your N-565 filing receipt from USCIS and all supporting documents for your expedited request for review to this appointment.
After I submit my application, when will I receive my replacement naturalization certificate?
If you submit all required supporting evidence, fees, and properly completed forms, you should receive your new certificate between 4 weeks and 6 months. There is no set processing time, so the time can vary greatly.
