To enter the US under these categories you must satisfy the following requirements:
- Enrollment in an “academic” educational program, language-training program, or a vocational program;
- The school that you intend to study at must be approved by the Student and Exchange Visitors Program (SEVP), Immigration and Customs Enforcement;

General instruction by USCIS
If you wish to apply for a student visa you must first be accepted into an established university or college that is certified by SEVP.
If you are outside of the US and applying for an F-1 from your home country, you must first select a US school and apply. Once your application is accepted the designated school official (DSO) will send you a Form I-20 and you must pay the I-901 Student and Visitor Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) database fees with an ID number. Once your information is entered in to the SEVIS database you will need to complete the application for your visa, Form DS160. Once the application has been submitted you can schedule an interview with your US embassy or consulate.
You will need to bring the following documentation to your F-1 visa interview:
- Form I-20;
- SEVIS I-901;
- DS 160 fees receipt;
- Passport, which must be valid for 6 months after entry into US;
- Transcripts from previous educational institution(s);
- Description of program of study;
- Information for your accommodations in US;
- Evidence of funds to cover tuition and living expenses in US.
Additional evidence may be required by your consulate or embassy.
If your visa is approved, you will need to contact your school and notify them of your expected arrival date and obtain a new I-20 if the dates of your study have changed. You can enter the US no earlier than 30 days before your program start date.
If you are already in the US on another visa, you will first need to determine if you are eligible to change your status to an F-1 visa. If you are able to, you will need to obtain an I-20 and follow the procedure for changing your nonimmigrant visa status.
How long will an F-1 visa allow me to stay in the US?
Upon entry into the US, the immigration officer will issue you an I-94 which will indicate your authorized stay in the US. Typically the officer will authorize you or “Duration of Status” or “D/S” which means that you can remain in the US for the duration of your studies. Once your program of study is over you will have 60 days to depart the country.
Can I work in the US while here on an F-1 visa?
It depends. There are strict work restriction which generally permit F-1 students to work on the campus of the university they study at for up to 20 hours per week. Students may also obtain permission to work under two training programs, OPT and CPT. Before obtaining work in the US you should first speak with the designated school official at your university to make sure your employment will not violate the terms of your F-1 visa status.
I recently arrived in the US on a student visa and I would like to go home during winter break. Will I be able to return to the US on my F1 visa?
Yes. You are permitted to leave for no more than 5 months. If your original F-1 visa has expired then you must have a new F-1 visa. You will need to have your designated school official sign your I-120 before you leave the US.
I applied for my student visa and was approved. I recently received an I-20 from a different school and will attend that school instead. Can I enter the US on the visa that was approved?
No. Since you will be attending a different school, you will need file for a new visa.
