U.S. Citizenship Requirements for U.S. Armed Forces
If you are a member of the U.S. Armed Forces, Coast Guard or National Guard, you could be eligible to become a U.S. citizen after just 1 year- as much as 4 years before most other green card holders. This option is only available to members of the military who have served honorably.
Among honorable service in the Armed Forces, you must also meet the other detailed requirements outlined in Section 328(a) of the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA). We have simplified those requirements for you here.

An applicant for naturalization must meet the following citizenship requirements:
Be 18 years of age or older
Without exception, applicants for this category must be at least 18 years old.
Have served honorably in the U.S. Armed Forces for a minimum of 1 year
Applicants with a record of honorable service in the United States Army, Navy, Coast Guard, Air Force, or Marines who have served for a minimum of 1 year may be eligible for naturalization through this category. You must be serving currently or apply within 6 months of your separation from the Armed Forces under honorable conditions. Dishonorable discharge would disqualify an applicant for this category.
Be a green card holder at the time of your naturalization interview
Honorable service in the U.S. Armed Forces allows non-citizens to bypass the general rule that requires naturalization applicants to be green card holders for minimum of 5 years before filing their Form N-400. An applicant in this category need only have his or her green card by the day of their naturalization interview.
Have a working knowledge of the English language and U.S. history and civics
Generally, applicants must know how to speak, read, and write English and know some U.S. history, as well as understand some concepts of the American government.
There are, however, some exceptions to this requirement for applicants with learning or physical disabilities.
Possess a good moral character
While applicants are not required to be perfect, they must demonstrate good moral character and a desire to abide by the principles of the U.S. Constitution and the laws and guidelines of American society. Applicants must abstain from the following activities to maintain their eligibility to naturalize:
- Crimes with intent to harm another person
- Crimes of fraud against the Government
- 2 or more crimes with a combined penalty of a 5-year sentence
- Controlled substance law violations (of U.S., state, or foreign country)
